Disoriented

A blow takes her breath away
disorients
knock your socks off fierce
as she clings to spidery webbed ropes of understanding

She clings to her hopes and desires
passions burning within
her drive to move forward and conquer
all past mistakes
original sin
consumes her
disorients
spinning on sticky web of illusion

Gate keepers leap to protect her
promises of harmony and calm
center of their focus
they are quickly restrained by Michael and Morgan
also watching the events unfold

The young woman has chosen
of her own free will
to undergo a challenge, see what her determination
might reveal
she alone has to fight her demons
past and present
present day
long past due date
unwrapped
festering
fermenting
becoming something else
something unnameable
unrecognizable
Great distress rises amidst the peace loving
keepers of the gate

The maiden squeezes her eyes shut
squeezes her legs
no entry allowed
squeezes against time
no penetrating thoughts to break barrier
she clings to spidery thread of inner strength

A halo appears behind her closed eyes
lifting her up out of herself
watching
knowing
slip, slip
slippery slope
she is on a shifting course
swaying
rocking
pump, pumping
up and down

Gasping
straining
desire to be on top
physically spent
her mind still weaves
dodges on wobbly legs
spinning threads to
outwit, outlast, and outsmart her fears

Photograph

A photograph
tattered and torn
like the edges of our emotions
raw
frayed
quivers in my trembling hands

A moment captured
caught off guard
a hunted animal
suspicious eyes stare back
undercurrent of distrust
seized by the camera

I look at your wary eyes
look for a sign of forewarning
a sign the storm may be abating

I look in your deep blue eyes
bottomless depths of complexity
Swirling thoughts eddy
a sob escapes
as I fall into a vortex of unnamed feelings

Surfacing, I look into your steel blue eyes
resolve weakening
I have received a sign
but I no longer remember its importance

I am skeptical
mistrust has found a home
in my heart too

Another pair of doubtful eyes
to be snared by a camera

Time

time

(internet photo)

rushing
rushing
escaping time

wind whistles through air
siren song accompaniment
for racing heart
chasing balance
high heels and oxfords
march swiftly
through their appointments
and agendas
trying not to step on toes
or become scuffed

time escaping
slipping by
quick sip of bitter coffee
gone cold
waiting
ignored
warmth evaporated

time slipping by without thought or care
for what we do
toys tossed carelessly in a corner
building blocks in disarray
aging parents
ignored
waiting
for a visitor

time passes no matter what
pop tarts and cinnamon buns
robust wine
talcum powder
time witnesses our fickle tastes and desires
what’s new becomes old
becomes new
becomes old again
cycle continues with each generation

we try to grasp it
save it
hoard it
yet it remains elusive
here but not here

watches and calendars
timex and rolex
bring order to our day
connect the dots
compartments
squares
little boxes to fill in
with soft leaded pencil
so changes can be erased
more time filled
no permanent marks left behind

continually chased
continually used
measured time
surrendered time
nap time
down time
it’s all about time

yours until the end of time

Clandestine Visitor

Light patter of feet
upon bare floor
spring rain gently tapping on glass

Little person unable to sleep
attempts stealthy reprieve from night time ritual
creeps toward lamplight

Open book lies on blanketed lap
words on yellowed pages invisible
disinterest feigned in clandestine visitor
silently daring next move

The child darts from shadow to shadow
a staccato movement
stops and starts

Her position freezes
as I clear my throat
fetching a giggle

she anticipates discovery

With the willpower of Hercules
I do not look her way

Waiting
Waiting
Waiting

Until just the right moment to
FLING
my arms out
to grab her

Squeals of delight elicited
as we tumble
into a laughing heap

Deception

you think your actions are hidden
they are not
you think you are stealthy
your steps reverberate across the plain

eyes see what you believe is unseen
dark shines bright
shadows illuminate

echoes of actions
return to haunt

forgotten splintered emotions
surface
pierce tranquility
draw fresh wounds

tears
briny solution
wash away
remorse
droplets of forgiveness
hint at hope

Moon Rattle

(internet photo)

moon rattle in my palm
acoustic spirit world connector
blend of natural elements and mystical belief

smooth white mollusk
encircled by brown striations
symphonic blend
crustacean style Sydney opera house

perfect to capture the roar and applause of the sea
to echo and amplify beach pebbles that
tumble and jump over each other within

browns and white whorl to a creamy point
milky way thoughts of origin
time and distance transcended
soulful continuity

the rattle contains energy
mystery
a reminder of celestial guidance
sun and moon drawing forth emotion
a vision of waves washing over
gently
swaying
caressing to and fro
crashing
pulling
spewing foam in a stormy moment
mimicking the ebb and flow of life

taut deer hide
sandpaper rough
tanned creamy white
encloses the operatic opening
captures vibrations
magnifies their song

an intuitive stroke paints the leather
a coppery swirl of motion
rises
bends
folds itself around
a yin yang symbol
twin fish
balanced
spooning each other
their bright red eyes
seeing beyond the palm of my hand

see my soul
see the universe
ready to carry my artful prayers
rattle vibrations
heavenward

Sharing

love
(internet photo)

Embrace the moment
capture the spirit
a feeling rare to behold

When ardor dims
wrinkles set in
where will we be

A friendship
warm and kind
togetherness still desired
sharing thoughts and hopes
goals achieved together

I want a ready smile
a hug
a companion
I want someone comfortable to be near
someone who can abdicate power
or dictate when necessary

I want someone who enjoys nature
appreciates beauty
who is confident
happy
able to share without unrealistic demands

I want someone who lifts my spirits
whose spirits are buoyed by my presence
I want someone who can help me
turn my dreams into reality

I want you

“There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” – Nelson Mandela

sometimes life seems unfair
where are you going
how will you get there
why is this happening

question

wonder

learn

why

adjust to the change
answer the challenge
let yourself shine through

no matter what anyone says

Hurting

It hurts so much
I’m not sure where I feel the pain
I know my life will never be the same

The path I’ve chosen isn’t an ordinary one
I wonder if the worst is over
or yet to come

Strength to climb mountains
courage to fly high
but facing rejection
my heart withers and dies

I know it has to happen
I know this will pass
but right at this moment
I don’t think I can last

It hurts so much
I’m not sure where I feel the pain
I wonder if my life
will be happy again
