Burnt Toast

Your reflection
looks me in the eye.
Stainless steel toaster
browning bread,
heats your memory.

I look away,
dark brooding clouds
hide the sunrise,
reflect my mood.

You no longer
move through my days.
We parted ways long ago,
yet here you are
grilling my morning,
warming my cheeks.

Light echoes of our
retreating love
reflect off
a shimmering appliance.

Cat and Mouse

It’s a game of cat and mouse.
You hide.
I seek.
You disappear,
appear,
vanish
and reappear again.
All while I am
one step
behind.

A magical illusion occurs.
I see a rabbit
lifted from a hat.
I fail to see where it goes.
I fail to see where it goes
when the magician releases the long ears.
When you stride off
I fail to see where you go.

I sigh with relief when I see your smile.
I think it is over
but off you go again.
The pattern repeats.
There is no end.
It is a game of perpetual motion
but I do not want to play anymore.
I am tired of chasing you
chasing dreams
chasing hopes for the future.

Rules keep changing to meet your needs.
Your hungry craving
to hide in the shadows
leaves me tip toeing
through muddy streets and
entering places I did not know
anyone could go.
I am scared you will
get lost and forget your way
out of the corner
that draws you
from the light.

I am afraid
that I will only fit
going in
and will not be able to wiggle
and slither
myself
back
to the light of day.

It is exhausting.

I don’t want to play anymore.
You are so engrossed.

The game has taken on
a life of its own.

Disoriented

A blow takes her breath away
disorients
knock your socks off fierce
as she clings to spidery webbed ropes of understanding

She clings to her hopes and desires
passions burning within
her drive to move forward and conquer
all past mistakes
original sin
consumes her
disorients
spinning on sticky web of illusion

Gate keepers leap to protect her
promises of harmony and calm
center of their focus
they are quickly restrained by Michael and Morgan
also watching the events unfold

The young woman has chosen
of her own free will
to undergo a challenge, see what her determination
might reveal
she alone has to fight her demons
past and present
present day
long past due date
unwrapped
festering
fermenting
becoming something else
something unnameable
unrecognizable
Great distress rises amidst the peace loving
keepers of the gate

The maiden squeezes her eyes shut
squeezes her legs
no entry allowed
squeezes against time
no penetrating thoughts to break barrier
she clings to spidery thread of inner strength

A halo appears behind her closed eyes
lifting her up out of herself
watching
knowing
slip, slip
slippery slope
she is on a shifting course
swaying
rocking
pump, pumping
up and down

Gasping
straining
desire to be on top
physically spent
her mind still weaves
dodges on wobbly legs
spinning threads to
outwit, outlast, and outsmart her fears

Perseverence

The Climb

A mountain looms before me

I take a deep breath
exhale slowly
warily eyeing the climb
the challenge
the dare

To conquer
a gift of sweeping views
awaits

“Tell me what you know about running”
The query from another runner startles me
makes me laugh
“Put one foot in front of the other.
That’s all there is to it”
we chat

Arriving in the granite giant’s shadow
without a backward glance
my unexpected inquisitor
clearly an experienced runner
leaves me in his dust

As I embark on the imposing ascent
I contemplate my own
words of wisdom
Just keep putting
one foot in front of the other
