covers pull back
expose her bare toes
she holds her breath
until the moment
he teaches her to walk

Hornets
Angry hornets fly
en masse swiftly defending
paper nest flutters
Puppeteer
An ornate time piece on a wrist
jeweled
shiny, elegant chrome chronograph
or matte finish
functional
practical, purposeful chronometer
A puppeteer’s handcuff
controlling movement subtly
directing thoughts subliminally
a marionette to be pushed, pulled, directed
Steady tick, tick, tick
hypnotizes
activity done mindlessly
going through motions without attention
glazed eyes
striving to make it from one
paycheque to the next
without breaking the strings of the masterminder
oblivious to the pull
of the masterminder
Second hand sweeps
behind the minute
behind the hour
striving to move ahead
but wired into place
hour leads
minute follows
second lapses
wired into place
pulled along by the others
gears and cogs manipulating movement
invisible strings manipulating movement
time manipulating movement
World focused on clocks and calendars
great energy expended keeping up to the time keepers
Obsession with timepieces
and calendars is restricting
what is this competition that has been thrust upon wrists,
on walls, on clock towers in time squares
town squares
Shirk wrist pieces, cell phones
anything that strives to own your being
Pay no attention to these measurements
these pushes and pulls
prods to direct you
Allow no thoughts of time to settle upon you
consume you
control you
and watch your mind settle
rest
and give birth to new ideas
The Shroud
sleek veil slowly lifts
bright light streams in
eyes blink
temporary blindness
optimistic future comes into view
complications tumble aside
path visible
meaningful words are felt
healing music is heard
movement occurs
with gust of bad news
silky shroud falls
flutters across face
intense struggle
finest fabric weighs heavy
attempt to avoid destruction
necessary filter carries great value
disguised opportunities
await discovery
Clandestine Visitor
Light patter of feet
upon bare floor
spring rain gently tapping on glass
Little person unable to sleep
attempts stealthy reprieve from night time ritual
creeps toward lamplight
Open book lies on blanketed lap
words on yellowed pages invisible
disinterest feigned in clandestine visitor
silently daring next move
The child darts from shadow to shadow
a staccato movement
stops and starts
Her position freezes
as I clear my throat
fetching a giggle
she anticipates discovery
With the willpower of Hercules
I do not look her way
Waiting
Waiting
Waiting
Until just the right moment to
FLING
my arms out
to grab her
Squeals of delight elicited
as we tumble
into a laughing heap
The Space
Magical Maze
Enter the maze
let the magic unfold
trust your intuition
No idea what lies
in the network ahead
trust your intuition
Around each bend
enchantment holds breath
trust your intuition
Scratches scrapes
thorns brambles within
reach out to hamper your step
don’t rush keep pace
aware of all that you see
trust your intuition
Trust your heart
with each movement you make
it is linked to your soul
an ancient cosmic connection
Listen to the maze
to the growth that surrounds you
trust your intuition
It will not lead you astray
City Park Springtime
City life glimpses:
Greyhound
shaggy grey and white fringe
hangs in its eyes; patiently
waiting for owner to finish reunion
friends not seen since winter hiatus
Mama and papa geese stand guard
over brood of goslings who
waddle and stumble drunkenly
along muddy river bank
Green herbs outside busy restaurant
fill small wooden garden boxes
wait expectantly for use in
fresh salad or to add delicate flavor
to delicious entrees
Pedestrians amble
jackets and sweaters unzipped
tied around waist
wrapped around shoulders
air warmer than expected
Young lovers pose along bridge
spontaneous selfie
quick kiss
lingering embrace
self consciously pull apart
as others approach
Toddler whizzes by on wooden strider
oblivious to any danger
excitement alive on his face
His mother several paces behind
awkward on roller blades
her staccato movement
sharp contrast to son’s
blithe freedom
Cyclists zip along
warning bell heard second before flash past
Dogs on leash
obedient
tugging
dodging other park users
A flurry of activity
as city dwellers shed winter cloak
welcoming spring
