Controlling the Desire-Body: HowDid You Kill Your Rooster, Husam?

Coleman Barks tells us in the introduction to this chapter that “Sufis call the wantings nafs. From the urgent way lovers want each other to the sannyasin’s search for truth, all meaning is from the mover. Every pull draws us to the ocean.” Rumi says it’s important to live the wantings as they come and not get stuck somewher stagnant. Always there is room for reflection to determine exactly what Rumi is trying to tell us!

On Monday I began reading the piece titled: Controlling Urgency, What a Woman’s Laughter Can Do, And the Nature of True Virility. This reading covers seven pages in the book so I decided to read a page each day this week. As I read I kept reminding myself of who Rumi’s audience was at the time of his teaching. His truths apply today as much as they applied then, but how he chose to share a thought or idea was linked to the time and culture in which he lived. This story involves a Caliph, the Captain of his army and a beautiful woman. It’s a love story with twists and turns that Rumi uses to teach his listeners. He teaches about the body’s desire and how all consuming it can be. He teaches about lust. He teaches about telling the truth. He teaches about how listening to the faint whispering of the Divine can lead to breaking cycles. Rumi concludes his story with the Caliph, “ending the cycle of sowing lust and reaping secrecy and vengefulness.” I believe he is telling us that we always have the opportunity to look within at our motives and see if they align with the Divine.

This post was inspired by my brother’s dog. Credit for “love sponge” goes to my wonderful friend, Janet 🙂

Spunky little schnauzer
full of pep and vigor
velvety soft curls
an ebony blanket
comforting souls
looking for solace

Bushy eyebrows
cover deep set dark eyes
but cannot hide
intelligent personality
or playful energy

Spirited miniature love sponge
generous with your affection
quivering enthusiasm
visible in the vibrating wagging
of your stubby tail

Desire to please
supersedes all
passionate devotion
sealed with a dynamic sloppy
muzzled kiss

Disoriented

A blow takes her breath away
disorients
knock your socks off fierce
as she clings to spidery webbed ropes of understanding

She clings to her hopes and desires
passions burning within
her drive to move forward and conquer
all past mistakes
original sin
consumes her
disorients
spinning on sticky web of illusion

Gate keepers leap to protect her
promises of harmony and calm
center of their focus
they are quickly restrained by Michael and Morgan
also watching the events unfold

The young woman has chosen
of her own free will
to undergo a challenge, see what her determination
might reveal
she alone has to fight her demons
past and present
present day
long past due date
unwrapped
festering
fermenting
becoming something else
something unnameable
unrecognizable
Great distress rises amidst the peace loving
keepers of the gate

The maiden squeezes her eyes shut
squeezes her legs
no entry allowed
squeezes against time
no penetrating thoughts to break barrier
she clings to spidery thread of inner strength

A halo appears behind her closed eyes
lifting her up out of herself
watching
knowing
slip, slip
slippery slope
she is on a shifting course
swaying
rocking
pump, pumping
up and down

Gasping
straining
desire to be on top
physically spent
her mind still weaves
dodges on wobbly legs
spinning threads to
outwit, outlast, and outsmart her fears

Sharing

love

Embrace the moment
capture the spirit
a feeling rare to behold

When ardor dims
wrinkles set in
where will we be

A friendship
warm and kind
togetherness still desired
sharing thoughts and hopes
goals achieved together

I want a ready smile
a hug
a companion
I want someone comfortable to be near
someone who can abdicate power
or dictate when necessary

I want someone who enjoys nature
appreciates beauty
who is confident
happy
able to share without unrealistic demands

I want someone who lifts my spirits
whose spirits are buoyed by my presence
I want someone who can help me
turn my dreams into reality

I want you

Sweet Nectar

Confusion buzzes in my head
like a swarm of angry bees
that have lost their queen

I crave the sweet nectar
of love words
dripping smoothly from your lips
like honey off a comb

But I get
peanut butter and jelly promises
an unwelcome substitute
that sticks with dryness
rather than desire

A Glance

I see him
a glance
racing heart, sweaty palms
Do you think he feels the same?

Rapid pulse,
garbled words, come on tongue speak!
Timid smile
blue eyes twinkle
my knees go weak

Kind, gentle
thoughtful, intelligent
Fluttering heart, the spark of desire
Do you think he feels the same?

Soft, warm
tender touch
melting will, ache to be one
dream to be friends forever
Do you think he feels the same?

Teamwork

We are in this together
You and I
Decision made long ago
To face life’s challenges as one

Little did we know
What we were signing up for

In a moment
Of bliss and happiness
We thought
We could conquer
The world

We believed
That no matter
What life threw our way
Together
We could handle it

We have
Our share of trials
Test of the bond
Between us
Days
At each other’s throat

Have to dig deep
To find
What brought us
Together
In the first place

Life has been generous
We have
Moments
Of wonder and joy
Proud moments
Our own
Our family’s

We have learned
To cope
With anxious
And sad moments
Crazy left curves
Out of the blue
Least expected moments

Compromise
Balance
Moderation
Advice given
And taken

Our life isn’t perfect
But we have
More good days
Than bad
And you
Are the person
I want by my side
When those bad moments
Strike
