Pied Piper

(This post was inspired after hearing Lemon Bucket Orkestra from Toronto, Canada. A lively, high energy performance!)

Pied Piper leads
rollicking fast paced musical experience
Overworked feet stomp
weary hands clap
day to day life is forgotten

Tambourine jangles
keeping pace with piper
violin sends notes screaming
squealing into the frenzy
People jump up and dance
unable to resist whirling dervish notes

European melodies
Accordion tunes
soulful immigrant history
lead frolicking party

Multicultural fusion of folk song
touch visceral chord
reach in and draw out inherent rhythms
playfulness
joy

Hips sway, bodies twist
primal encounter
children and adults
young and old
are infused with instinct
for emotional expression
no one can remain still

In presence of piper
people become sea of motion
bouncing
jumping
arms legs akimbo

Piper tells stories without words
there is an urgency
come now
dance now
now, now, it must be NOW
Music builds to a crescendo
Nothing matters
but NOW
This Moment!

Rhythm

Dawn stretches her colors gracefully
behind an accumulation of grey cloud
rendering a rhythm
to start a new day

Breath of my sleeping husband
joins the diurnal pulse
his chest rising and falling
like gentle waves cresting

Percolating coffee
pfft, pfft, pffts
as it tries to contain
energy within the beans
struggling to maintain tempo
to find a perfect blend

Rain patters on the window
knocking for entry
to escape its own wetness
adding to pattern flow
already set in motion

Windshield wipers wiping
kind of like singing off key
their meter gasping disappointment
at the incessant downpour

The day’s cadence quickens
acquiring a staccato feel
stop and go cars
interrupting honks

The surge in percussion
throbs in my temples
requiring an end of the day sip of wine
a sunset beat slowing things down
to match dawn’s graceful rhythm

Cacophony

Skeletons jangle
dangle from a string
produce eerie music
wind chime of dead
relative stories
long gone
attempt to be heard

whispers of memories
shift bones
change beat
swing rhythm
recollection rises to surface
before recognition
slips away

elusive melody
mournful
an elegy
replaced by
quickened tumble of sound
lilting spill of noise
another story scrambling to be told
“don’t forget about me
I’m still here”

movement increases
bones compete to bring forth
their etude
music becomes cacophony!
indistinguishable chords
lyrical distortion
lost in the chaos!

skeletons untangle
slowly hang limp
a bump now and then
produces a click or a clack

hands are over ears

strange chorus deferred to another time
conductor must be found
for this otherworldly orchestra
to decipher
ancestor

I Got the Blues

Today I decided to write a blues “song” (poem). I am not a song writer or a singer but this is something I have wanted to try for some time now.
You have to imagine the words with Da – da – da – DAH type of rhythm and a harmonica.
Despite this being a blues piece I hope you have as much fun with it as I did! 🙂

I got the blues
down in the dumps
melancholy blues
missing you
and don’t know what to do
I got the blues

Ever since
you closed the door
and decided to talk
to me no more
I’ve had to find
another way
to make it through
my lonely days

I got the blues
down in the dumps
melancholy blues
waiting for
a call from you
I got the blues

When you chose
to walk away
the sun did hide
and skies went grey
I looked high
and I looked low
to find out where
you did go

I feel so lonely – baby
I feel so lonely
I feel so lonely – baby
I could cry

This empty bed
with cold, cold sheets
reminds me of
where we did meet
bodies tangled
heated breath
but nothing now
since you have left

I got the blues
down in the dumps
melancholy blues
will I ever
get over you
I got the blues
