Raindrops

raindrops

Raindrops fall gently
nourishing thirsty earth
life giving water

Swollen rivers flow
swiftly through the neighborhood
alarming the people

This precious liquid,
necessary renewal,
no longer admired

Destruction disguised
a benign interloper
warily watched

Nature’s fury shows
humans cannot outwit drops
steadily falling

Life giving water
becomes the reapers hand
exacting its due

Circle of life come
full as we watch lustrous pearls
of rain gently fall

My Visit to Dordrecht, Netherlands

Brug naar de Tijd, Grote Kerk met Zwijndrechtse brug, Dordrecht,

Colorful echoes of the past
collide with bright visions of the future
Slow steady rain drenches ambition and desire
Need for heat and warmth
propels feet forward
Wetness seeps into fabric, into pores
permeates a moment that has been experienced
by many before
Standing below historical buildings with
their antique facades
Now
seems to be the only thing that matters
yet Now was thought to be
equally important one thousand years ago
Determined explorers, rowdy sailors, sly traders, clever merchants
All who passed this way
share Now
it has come and gone and come again
as colorful echoes of the past
collide with bright visions of the future

Enchantment

1920x1080 Wallpaper

Today is a day of enchantment
Elves elude, fairies dance
Pixie dust shimmers in the air

Anything is possible
Child-like innocence
Awe
World a foreign land

Treasures before me
Vast endless prairies
Open fields
Fresh thirst quenching water
An abundance of food
Local, organic, and global delicacies

Delightful lick of creamy ice cream
quickly melting atop waffle cone
Savory scent of barbecue wafts in air

Threat of thundershowers add to
Mystique and joy of the day
Conjure illusions of
Scaly dragons with fiery breath

Today is a magical day
Full of familiar sights
wearing a marvel sheen

Environmental S.O.S

Primordial drums resonate deep within the soul
Calls
Whispers of ancient wisdom
reverberate off cityscape
tease with their presence

Last rays of dying sun shimmer
before slips behind mountains
Promise of greatness lies within flaming sky
just as in elusive whispers

Tribal chants hums beneath a discordant thrum of Deerfoot traffic
seems a respite from chaotic rat race

Toxic sludge flows through veins
threatening to poison
The noxious routine pumping waste
onto the landscape
pump, pumps and ooze
pump and ooze
guzzling greed for god

Erect aspens tremble
Geese migrate over scarred pits of earth
ripped apart, left raw and suppurating
No place to land

Feel the throb
pulsating cry for help
rituals of our ancestors
beg for release
ache to cleanse and heal

Primordial drums resonate deep within the souldrum

Puppy Love

Japanese Bonsai Maple

My husband and I have an ongoing argument
over the merits of getting a puppy
Our conversations go back and forth
between pros and cons
Ping pong of Olympic proportions

puppies bring joy
puppies are work
puppies love unconditionally
puppies require care and attention
puppies are loyal
puppies chew shoes

A battle of wills
Undertaken with love
no clear winner
A stalemate

Recently we stopped
enroute to a friend’s home
lunch date scheduled

Forty-five minutes elapsed
We lobbed to and fro
merits of purchasing a
Janpanese Bonsai Maple

We were late for lunch

Peals of laughter
split the air
Our friend astutely observed
If a plant caused that much
discussion and consternation
we were in no way ready
to take on a puppy

No puppy has been brought
into our home
We do have
A beautiful new zen plant

City Park Springtime

City life glimpses:
Greyhound
shaggy grey and white fringe
hangs in its eyes; patiently
waiting for owner to finish reunion
friends not seen since winter hiatus

Mama and papa geese stand guard
over brood of goslings who
waddle and stumble drunkenly
along muddy river bank

Green herbs outside busy restaurant
fill small wooden garden boxes
wait expectantly for use in
fresh salad or to add delicate flavor
to delicious entrees

Pedestrians amble
jackets and sweaters unzipped
tied around waist
wrapped around shoulders
air warmer than expected

Young lovers pose along bridge
spontaneous selfie
quick kiss
lingering embrace
self consciously pull apart
as others approach

Toddler whizzes by on wooden strider
oblivious to any danger
excitement alive on his face
His mother several paces behind
awkward on roller blades
her staccato movement
sharp contrast to son’s
blithe freedom

Cyclists zip along
warning bell heard second before flash past

Dogs on leash
obedient
tugging
dodging other park users

A flurry of activity
as city dwellers shed winter cloak
welcoming spring

Tree

P1050488P1050492

I see a tree
It won’t leave my mind
What stories are hidden in its branches?
What seeds of creativity are waiting to fall
upon the world in a shower of imagination and playfulness?

If I open the door
will I descend into Alice’s world?
Will the white rabbit and mad hatter await me?
Arrows and names point in all directions
infinite possibility awaits the believer

The tree in inviting
its whimsical appearance
elicits smiles
sparks the mind to embark
on a journey of chance

There are no right or wrong ways
the path is not straight or narrow
Looking upon the tree
one’s eye is directed upward
Spirit soars
Engage in the enchantment

Adrift

A gossamer thread floats lazily through the air
a breeze transports it
no particular destination in mind
As the silky strand drifts
it slowly rotates
spirals up and down
Sunlight glints and flickers on this unanchored spider’s weave
a twinkling filament
invisible made visible

What stories and knowledge
are woven into this strand?
How did it extricate itself from its web?
Has it been sent adrift meant to be found,
like a message in a bottle
waiting to reveal its secret?
