Indiscriminate
bombs rain down on sacred groves
innocence shattered
Angry, helpless trees
rustle their disapproval
hoping to be heard

Indiscriminate
bombs rain down on sacred groves
innocence shattered
Angry, helpless trees
rustle their disapproval
hoping to be heard
A little white ball
sits placidly on the grass
Taunts with its presence
dimples gleam in the sunlight
You expect
Hope
it will travel in one direction
but sometimes this impish sphere
has other ideas
As you search the long grass
for this nugget of white rubber and balata
Your mind calculates club selection
based on
angle to the green
length of grass
wind speed
uphill or downhill lie
But ultimately
unless hit perfectly
this little defender of the green
will do what it wants
You are lead hither and yon
rather than a direct route
to the targeted flag stick
Outwitted by the
wily orb
with the devilish dimples

Moon rises over city
a glowing lantern
silent symbol of graceful timelessness
She has not forgotten
her busy children
Quietly following an ancient path
she winks and shines
sees sorrow and joy
trials and tribulations
life passing through ups and downs
She offers a gentle reminder
even dark night
has its time
for glorious light

A mountain looms before me
I take a deep breath
exhale slowly
warily eyeing the climb
the challenge
the dare
To conquer
a gift of sweeping views
awaits
“Tell me what you know about running”
The query from another runner startles me
makes me laugh
“Put one foot in front of the other.
That’s all there is to it”
we chat
Arriving in the granite giant’s shadow
without a backward glance
my unexpected inquisitor
clearly an experienced runner
leaves me in his dust
As I embark on the imposing ascent
I contemplate my own
words of wisdom
Just keep putting
one foot in front of the other
Walls lean and tilt
neighbourhood gossips
moving closer to hear
conversations of passersby
footsteps
voices
many have been heard
Ancient building blocks
sentinels of the city
harbour untold stories
a voluminous library
compendiums full of personal narratives
about tourists and residents alike
Moon, stars, sun, rain
these hovering facades endure centuries
of eyes looking upon their eroding exteriors
some balancing precariously
some appearing to wink like a devious child
bursting to tell a secret
Patiently they take all in
fashions and styles vary
disseminated through a profusion of languages
people come and go
Walls remain
leaning tilting
moving in to hear
more of the conversations below

Captivating spheres
iridescent rainbows
full of air
laughter
love
They bring happiness
smiles, joy
entertainment to those
chasing them
as they dance
on the wind
drift
haphazardly around
exploding with pleasure
at the slightest touch
spreading enchantment
in a splash
of giggles

promise of firework celebration
draws crowd hours in advance
like iron shavings to a magnet
seduction of even most staunch
early bedtime proponent
champagne cork “pop” and glint of color
turn all eyes to east
an organism unified by quest for entertainment
Snap Flash
Bang Fizzle
myriad colors light the sky
Bursts of Sparkle cascade outward
from cores of intensely concentrated energy
Rainbow sparks spray upward
gushing geysers
arcing ever higher
still glass skyscrapers
offer moments of gauzy reflection
Kaleidoscope colors
weave and wend across the night sky
starry paint by number
to satiate throng’s appetite
for glowing color spectacle
Applause, cheers echo
along hillside, rooftops, riverbanks
broad smiles of delight
fading into the night
like spent explosives
I have started down a path
of which I do not know
the destination
if I do this
it leads to that
choosing an alternate route
also leads to that
so
I am no further ahead
am I
or perhaps
that
is where
I am meant to be!
Outdoors: air, wind, energy, flow, strength, movement, color, sound, freshness, invigorating, dynamic
Indoors: stationary, stale, stagnant, monotonous, achy, lulling, mind numbing, T.V., computer
Outdoors: calling, enticing, beckoning
Indoors: procrastinating
