Looking in the Mirror

Have you ever felt like you are someone else
looking in
looking out

You hear chatter and see smiles
volume up
volume down

You see motion
stepping fast
stepping slow

But what do you see
as time and distance strain
and fade away

What do you hear
as blasts turn to whispers
and fade away

What do you feel
as shaking turns to quivers
and fade away

someone in the mirror
fading away

Hourglass Houdini

Time
Elusive
Slippery as an eel
Think you have it
then it’s gone

Time
Master illusionist
Hourglass Houdini
Fills day
with ideas, promises, activity, hope
Only to find
time you thought you had
is no longer there
A great escape artist
Vanishing
with the flick of texting thumbs
or click of computer fingers

Nothing is as it seems
Be wary of conjecture
Skeptical of magic
Question where time is going
Become master of your own reliability
deluding no one
including your self

Access Denied

locked door

(image from flickr.com)

The door is locked
and you won’t share the key

Sometimes I catch you in there
when you think I won’t notice

like the Garden of Eden
fruit of all trees can be eaten
except one

I have access to all rooms
except one

I don’t desire knowledge
for I know what’s in there

Neatly packaged bundles of memory
wrapped with the bonds of time

some bursting their ties
swollen with retelling

others tattered around the edges
faded and worn

I want to throw the door open
dust away cobwebs

let in the light of day
cut the bonds of these tightly held packages
loose the memories

releasing
like a boat being untied from its mooring
ready to accept a new adventure

but the door remains locked
and you won’t share the key

Spontaneous Aria

finca-draculas-beautiful-gardens-cerro-puntaThe photo is from the Beautiful Garden website. It is where I imagine the birdsong I heard would originate 🙂

(This post is dedicated to my dear friend Betty)

Today when I was out for a run
I wished you were there
to inform and enlighten me
as to which of our feathered friends originated
the alluring melody I heard

I thought you would know it in an instant!
My knowledge of birds is so limited
I can recognize the haunting call of a loon
at dusk or dawn
I know the repetitive chick-a-dee-dee-dee

This afternoon I was an uninvited witness
to a bewitching love warble
no bird was seen
not even the fleetest glimpse of plumage

When the achingly enthralling song began
city din was drowned out
no strolling pedestrian chatter
no traffic hum or passing train roar

The musical tenor was so pure
I was transported through time
to an era of innocence, enveloped by love

My breath caught
my heart was pierced by the sheer elegance of the cadence
I strained to hear more
but was left disappointed

I would have to settle for the brief solo performance
No encore was forthcoming

Crash and Burn

Tempest brewing
pushing limits

Thoughts bombard
from every direction
pierce heart
puncture skin
catch hair

tangled

inspiration
hallucination
provocation
tempting fate

late nights
lack of sleep
urgency prevails

one more thing
one more thing
one more thing

Not enough time
so much to be done
lengthy lists trail on
a madness sets in
frenetic
fanatic
furious

emotional whirlwind

tears

dropped items
dropped calls
drops dripping unable to quench

nothing makes sense

embers burn
ready to ignite
burst into flame
consume all in path
ablaze
glorious fury
dances
skips

spent

only ashes remain
