Fond du Lac, Saskatchewan

We paddled 175km over nine days in northern Saskatchewan, sharing food, laughter, mosquitoes, and tons of fun with friends to inspire the following poem 🙂

I wait on a beach in Northern Saskatchewan
for aurora borealis to arrive.
My friends, modern nomads, tuck in
to yellow, blue, orange and green domes.
Sandstone hills and evergreen trees rise
above marshy grass.
Beneath a still surface
river current slides north toward Arctic,
mirror images of its shoreline
reaching for heaven.
Night hawks shoot skyward
torpedo down
wings bugling a haunting tune.
Therma-rests rustle
mosquitoes attack my ears
the world settles into a bedtime routine.
I think about waking up the others
with bear bangers on the beach.

Silence and Stillness

I sit outside
on a weather worn park bench
beneath a fragrant cherry tree.
Deep pink blossoms
punch a bright statement
of their presence
to the surrounding burgeoning
trees and shrubs.

With legs outstretched
on fresh green spring grass,
arms crossed below my chest,
I tilt my head toward the sun
and close my eyes.

Silence.

A cool breeze blows my hair
across my face and drops
cherry blossom kisses upon me.
Stillness follows styling
my hair abruptly in a abstract
modern art form,
casually dishevelled.

Stillness and silence;
agents sent to calm my occupied
mind, a prisoner of my own
thoughts, captive of racing
ideas and procrastination –
no focus;
Peacekeepers sent to mediate
warring factions of my
right and left brain.
Yellow sticky-note lists
battle for priority against
stacks of paper clutter and
baskets of laundry.

Birdsong can be heard.
Laughter of children, squealing
as they chase and dodge each
other. The clink of a dog
collar as it passes near.

I drift on a cherry blossom
into words of an unknown future.
I drift on the breeze like a
prayer rising to heaven,
a petition piggy-backing the
promise of spring bursting
with color and fragrance from
a dormant winter.
I drift…

And when I return,
silence and stillness remain
continuing their mediation.
My world has not changed
but my heart feels lighter
as I shake cherry blossom
petals from my hair.

Majestic Mountains

Distant majestic mountains,
intimidating mass of rocks.
Go around or journey over?

A menacing challenge.
A delightful pleasure.

Colorful meadow flowers,
scent of pine,
crisp air, tease the senses.
Brilliant light dances
across water and snow.
A gift of remote peace and tranquility.

They stand
witnessing people who come and go
scrambling,
climbing,
clinging
to their chipped but resolute rocky shoulders.

They stand
impassive to activity on their slopes,
people, smaller than ants, disappearing
in their crags and crevices.

They stand,
power contained deep within
may be
unleashed unexpectedly.

Beautiful sentinels
give glory with their presence.
Reminders that
sometimes
just being
is enough.

Phone Call

My telephone rings
jangling nerves with its chime
an unexpected call
my world changes

I hear your voice
quiet, calm, self assured
distance obliterated in an instant

I hear your voice
could there be a lovelier sound
my heart sings

a prayer answered
release of held breath

hope and happiness arrive
delivering a restorative message
“we are still here
we haven’t gone far”

I dare to accept hope
to take a chance
to believe that all will be well
equilibrium gained

I dare to believe in happiness
for you
for me

I dare to believe that you will find healing
solace
a way to deal with your addictions

I dare to believe that I will find acceptance
letting go
the ability to watch you fall
so you may rise above the demons that have tormented you

to believe we will find renewal
peace
a way to move on

my telephone rings
calming nerves with its chime
my world changes

Divine Teatime

Angel-Wings-Desktop-Wallpaper

I met with an angel
tea and cookies in a simple kitchen
made divine by her glorious light
With gratitude my heart sang
soaring octaves in this blessed atmosphere

I chattered and babbled
spilling all that had been held inside
as one would who has been injected with a truth serum

This heavenly being listened
nodded and smiled her celestial smile

I was filled with peace and tranquility
enthusiasm and energy to last a long time

Thank you dear soul messenger
for sharing tea with me

Limited Anger

Ears ring

Hiss and Snap
not a kettle or pot boiling

Something inside

I just want to be mad for awhile
I want to rage
to holler and yell
I want the world to suffer perceived injustice
with me
I don’t want to look for the positive
or see any silver lining

The limit has been reached
Any limit
My limit

I want to let emotions flow
tears to fall
I want to steam and boil
a sulphuric geyser field
exploding
soaring
shooting energy
into the sky
a powerful force
dangerous
yet beautiful to behold
bursting confines

then

Gone
As quickly as the eruption
spent

I want that moment

Let me shed
destructive thoughts
feel angry
voice my pain

Then subside
spent

Peace restored
