Sudden Storm

Change of season arrives
a startling revelation of nature’s own agenda

It arrives brisk and certain
unconcerned about the day’s forecast
or what the calendar says

Wet flurries settle sloppily
on unsuspecting pedestrians
white halos embracing hair

Bare feet peek out of open toed shoes
shivering at what they see
not quite ready for dark scratchy wool and boots

Sleet and snow climb lazily
onto any exposed surface
lingering in a detached manner

before slowly melting
Knowing soon
temperatures will dictate a grip
that cannot be so easily loosened

Milky Way

Milky way overflowed last night
spilling alabaster light into my life

Currents of ancient knowledge and history
flowed past my bedroom door

Gleefully I immersed myself in opalescent energy
shedding itself from borders of the galaxy

Ursa Major dipped low
growling amiably while helping me indulge

Angels hovered on the sidelines
excited as they watched events unfold

Aristotle, Pythagoras, Socrates and Galileo
mathematicians, scientists, mystics and priests
streamed by
splashing images of their ideas and philosophies as they went

Cassiopeia surged
Andromeda gushed
spiralling stars
rushing to escape their positions

I gulped and reveled in the shower of their wisdom
thriving in the unexpected arrival of this celestial accident

Sagittarius arched and bowed
amongst interstellar dust
I curtsied and giggled
at his chivalrous behaviour

As the star cluster
radiated and rotated
tried to right itself
I beamed
the magnitude of my aura
one with the universe

Dazed by the multitude of power
the flow of spirit
I slowly fell back
and remained prone

An orange hued giant star
floated back to the sky
as dawn approached

Galactic particles sprinkled on me
throughout the morning
Iridescent motes
tickling my thoughts
making me smile

Max

This post was inspired by my brother’s dog. Credit for “love sponge” goes to my wonderful friend, Janet 🙂

Spunky little schnauzer
full of pep and vigor
velvety soft curls
an ebony blanket
comforting souls
looking for solace

Bushy eyebrows
cover deep set dark eyes
but cannot hide
intelligent personality
or playful energy

Spirited miniature love sponge
generous with your affection
quivering enthusiasm
visible in the vibrating wagging
of your stubby tail

Desire to please
supersedes all
passionate devotion
sealed with a dynamic sloppy
muzzled kiss

Bullfrog Baptism

I was alone on a cloudy day
a weary fog
pregnant with plump moisture
sagged in the valleys
brushed treetops with the weight of its burden

A pungent odor permeated the thick air
as I walked outside
the smell of rot and decay
wrinkled my nose

I tried to ignore it
but the damp air trapped it
close to my body
penetrating my clothing
seeping into my pores

I walked faster
my heels clicking sharply on the gravel
crunching beneath my boots
perhaps speed
would allow me to escape the stench

Rounding a bend
beneath wet trees
releasing captured rain drip by drip
I heard a bull frog
and stopped to listen

In the stillness
I realized the foulness I smelled was with me
I tore off my jacket
flooded with relief
delighted I had removed
the offensive article

But as I continued along the path
the rotten smell slowly came back
it was as though a skunk
had sprayed me along the way

With each layer of clothing that I shed
I experienced a brief respite from
the sense of putrid death

Finally I stood naked
tears mixing with a gentle rain

I stood naked
no longer able to deny
where the smell was coming from

On my knees
face in hands
I begged an unseen power
to rid me of the fetor

I poured my heart out
to the bullfrog I had heard in the bulrushes

When I finished
silence of the forest
was broken
by a chorus of frogs
They had been there all along
I was not alone

Teardrops and raindrops
had cleansed me with the outpouring of emotion
I had unwittingly experienced
a rite of passage
No longer did I need to run from myself

This forest baptism
ablution by nature
with bullfrogs as witness
had purified my heart
my character
washed away my funky malodour
so I could recognize
sweetness and beauty within

Landscaping

At first glance
I see unfinished business
I want to change it
meet my idea of esthetics and beauty

A barren surface
appears raw, exposed
craggy granite is dusty and open
it makes me uncomfortable
I want to cover it up with
colorful flowers
pretty petals
make it look lovely
attractive
hide the earthy escarpment

Slowly I take time
to really look
really see what is before me

I notice the cacti are not as prickly as they seem
I see unique beauty
they belong in the scene
they must not be ripped out

Moss
lover of shadows
of shade
shies away from bright light
it belongs
With tenderness and care
its place in the rock garden
can be assured too

Bits of color
are dots throughout the stone
some peek out from the margins of the rocks
some create a subtle seam along a ridge
a kiss of gentleness amongst the hard surfaces
a promise of delight

One great rock
is surrounded by many smaller ones
a flow of gravel defines the space
supports the giant in the middle
that punctuates the surface with its presence

I am humbled by the gentle beauty
I had thought to be unfinished business
no flamboyant colors
or exotic flowers
an understated blending of non-descript items
that together
as a whole are quite striking
splendid
just as it is

Arachnid

Spiders
fat full bodies
centered and still

Large weaver climbs rapidly
on single strand

Webs
vertical diagonal horizontal
alive with silent movement
eyes dimly aware
spider sense tingling
heightened threat
vibration of pedestrian beneath

Joint legged invertebrate
moving fast
moving slow

Creatures hidden in daylight
come to life at night

Covered walkway
full
a horrifyingly beautiful sight
protecting eggs
hunting

Walk beneath
these nocturnal arthropods
racing heart demanding
no lingering
trust they will not descend

Follow the path
walk beneath fear
let go of fear
accept fear

Or deviate
walk without protection!

No matter the choice
can no longer pass unaware
