Birdwood Traverse #1

(personal photos)

I recently hiked Birdwood Traverse with my husband and friends. It is amazing that only 1 1/2 hours from city limits a backcountry experience can be had. This week I am sharing some of the photos we took on this wonderful hike. Over the course of the day we experienced a wide variety of terrain. Alpine meadows were in full bloom. We passed through the territory of a resident grizzly. Many signs of his activity could be seen (such as diggings, and fresh scat) but we did not see the alpine giant. However, a young male moose did greet us as we were parking our truck! I know photos can never quite do justice to actually being there but I hope you enjoy this vicarious trip 🙂

Distant mountains wait
feet take cold water plunge
meadow mud anoints

Junket

The following poem was inspired by an alliteration challenge shared by Jarrod on Haunted Lullaby.

Magnificent mountain melody,
otherworldly outdoor orchestra.

Rocks raucously rumble round,
sweet sibilant serenade.
Antlers automatically attune.

Turbulent tumbling tympanic trees
wrestle wild white-water.

Bees buzz bristling bears.
Cougar canticle calmly climbs cliffs.
Eagle echoes eerily.

Dancing drumming deer
join jovial jamming junket.

Visceral vibrating vibrato.

Tangled Web

Writing Prompt: “What a tangled web we weave
when first we practice to deceive”

What a tangled web we weave
when first we practice to deceive

Strands are sticky, catch us too
as we lie and fib, try to keep our cool

Words join, twist, form a pattern
circle round and round like rings of Saturn

Spectacular stories, pieces of comet
shattered moons revolve in atomic vomit

The plan was meant to smooth our way
but astral debris hinders plot to betray

Fabrications develop, along with suspicion
hurdles rise from others to thwart our mission

The coiling labyrinth takes on a life of its own
we can’t speak with others, can’t even use our phones

Because untruths told have grown and grown
our original purpose has become unknown

We are drawn into a deep black hole
a point of no return from our deceptive role
