I’ve never thought much about being an elf.
Mischievous, clever, mysterious creatures.
Then I slept beneath a giant oak tree
and stories of the past came flooding back to me.
Answers to questions I’ve always had about myself.

poplar sunbeams
ricochet toward my heart
and I fall in love with you

we look at opaque panes
wondering what birds know

to color our day,
this morning a rainbow greeted me
when I looked in your direction

in a place far from home,
do you ever feel alone?

beneath an ivory bridge
toward foreign shores
I strive to make it across
in a single leap to you

dangle from red branches
with crystal drops-
nature’s display of jewels
pales next to you

wizened shrubs watch passersby,
these secret keepers
wait until spring to release
beauty they can longer restrain

I recognize your halo
extending toward my heart
