Royal Duty

Queen of hearts peeks from behind knave of clubs
into a sea of grey and white heads bobbing
throughout the room.
Eyes are downcast in devotion to the royal court
fanned out before the lords and ladies,
and peasants, too.
Quiet devotion is interrupted by muted coughs or
the occasional chair scraping the floor.
The snap of cards
hitting the table salute allegiance to powerful
houses of kings. Any deviation from
ruling principles
results in immediate penalty. Festivities continue
until the last of the regal families
have exited behind
closed doors. A lucky few go away smiling as they
carry grand gifts bestowed upon them.
The rest return
home dreaming that next time a grandiose touch
of sovereignty will be in the cards
for them.

The following poem was inspired by an alliteration challenge shared by Jarrod on Haunted Lullaby.

Magnificent mountain melody,
otherworldly outdoor orchestra.

Rocks raucously rumble round,
sweet sibilant serenade.
Antlers automatically attune.

Turbulent tumbling tympanic trees
wrestle wild white-water.

Bees buzz bristling bears.
Cougar canticle calmly climbs cliffs.
Eagle echoes eerily.

Dancing drumming deer
join jovial jamming junket.

Visceral vibrating vibrato.

Will-o-the-wisps

Will-o-the-Wisp

The outline of memories hover along the periphery of the flames
like an image on the eyes after looking at the sun.

Will-o-the-wisps chase each other in circles,
dream sparks rising high in the night sky.

A little girl in her tree house eats fresh strawberries sweet and plump.
Lips and fingers stained red mark the pages of her book
as she reads perched amongst swaying aspens.

A coyote howls. A quick staccato yip, yip, yip
is followed by a long, drawn out oooo-eeee.
From far across the field another answers.

The little girl wavers then disappears.

A series of pops and sizzles from logs in the fire
insist on attention.
